Tourism Update looks at options for the budget-conscious traveller wanting a romantic getaway:
- Evelyn Pepler, Owner of Ocean Odyssey in Knysna, said: “We have a huge variety of accommodation offerings in Knysna and many are very romantic, by virtue of their scenic locations and beautiful views. There is something to suit all budgets, from caravan and camp sites, to self-catering units, home stays, B&Bs, guesthouses and hotels.”
- Wendy Rutherfoord, Director of Gondwana Game Reserve, said Gondwana’s affordable options included the Eco Camp and Kwena Lodge, situated in the reserve along the Garden Route. “Rooms are both cumulatively priced for the luxury and authentic Big Five experience they offer,” she said.
- Sean Kritzinger, Managing Director of Giltedge Africa, said: “We can offer value-packed safari itineraries using high-end four-star or entry-level five-star properties if a romantic couple are looking for ‘affordable luxury’.”
He said couples could enjoy an African safari in the Eastern Cape with Big Five game viewing, as well as off-the-beaten track locations, or combine more remote destinations with a popular Sabi Sand or Kruger National Park safari.

In addition, TU has spotted these affordable but romantic getaways:
- Inkasi Lodge is near the Klaserie River in Limpopo, close to the the Kruger Park’s Orpen Gate. The lodge has recently undergone extensive renovations, and the interior has been decorated with Ardmore fabrics.
There are two private cottages on a secluded dam, each with two en-suite bedrooms, a large bathtub that looks out on to the dam, a lounge, kitchenette and large veranda. The fifth bedroom has been incorporated into the entertainment area.
Activities include game drives, bush walks, and bird-watching. There is also a private guide who accompanies guests on outdoor activities and tracks wildlife on foot.
The lodge offers self-catering options, as well as bed and breakfast.
- Casterbridge Hollow Boutique Hotel in Mpumalanga is set on an old mango plantation in White River, which has been transformed into a country estate. It is just 20km from Nelspruit and 40km from Hazyview and Sabie, close to the Kruger National Park.
The hotel has 30 bedrooms and two honeymoon suites. It is also a wedding venue with three reception options.
- Cape St Francis Resort in the Eastern Cape is 90 minutes from Port Elizabeth airport and an ideal getaway for any couple wanting a budget-friendly holiday, as there are various types of accommodation on offer.
The resort offers an affordable collection of conventional hotel accommodation and self-catering apartments within its Club Break section, with one- and two-bedroom units available. Options are either self-catering or bed and breakfast and all are a short walk to the Cape St Francis beach.
- The Indaba Hotel, Spa and Conference Centre is conveniently located just north of Sandton, with many attractions nearby.
The hotel has a variety of room configurations to suit any type of traveller, from standard suites to exclusive luxury suites.
