Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) has revived an unpopular motion, first suggested two years back, to introduce multiple-entry fees for tourists should they temporarily leave a national park area.
At present, tourists pay a single fee in a particular park and receive a permit that can be used for multiple entries within 24 hours. This enables visitors to base themselves in Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) that border national parks where community projects offer camps, lodges and other services.
According to the tourism news service, eTN, Tanzanian stakeholders fear the implementation of the multiple fees will make the Tanzanian wildlife experience too expensive, cutting the WMAs out of the picture. If such communities are alienated from tourism’s benefits, the results could be a resurgence of poaching and vandalism.
Should the new rule go through, it is expected to be enforced in the first quarter of this year. When it was first mooted in 2013, it was suspended by the then Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism.
