Last week, we asked readers to tell us about their Mandela Day stories and contributions.
Celebrations for this year’s Mandela Day were encouraged to focus on two challenges, as recommended by the Gauteng Tourism Authority: food security and combating a culture of lawlessness. The Nelson Mandela Foundation invited all South Africans to honour Madiba’s birthday by contributing to and uplifting their most vulnerable communities.
Staff at Tourvest Destination Management took part in their #PrepareAndShare and #Each1Feed1 campaign with the aim of addressing the immediate challenge of families in communities that do not have access to food.
Staff were challenged to assist someone this winter with a warm meal or even a cup of coffee. It could be a neighbour, someone on the side of the road or even a friend or family member who could benefit from a warm meal.
Hero Holidays Volunteer Programmes made 25 litres of soup to feed the homeless with JOSH in Randburg, as part of the #chefswithcompassion #67000litres campaign.
BON Hotel Bloemfontein Central also took part in the campaign, making 67 litres of soup for Towers of Hope, an NGO in Bloemfontein's CBD that helps to look after the marginalised citizens of the city.
