The 11th annual Soweto Wine and Lifestyle Festival, which takes place from Friday, September 4 to Sunday, September 6 at Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication, Kliptown Soweto, will showcase Johannesburg as a leading, year-round destination.
This according to Laura Vercueil, PR and Communications Manager for Johannesburg Tourism, who said the event would continue to amplify Johannesburg as a leading destination for business, leisure, arts, lifestyle and arts.
The festival has grown over the last few years and is expected to draw in 15 000 attendees over the weekend. It was previously held at the University of Johannesburg, Soweto Campus, but was moved to accommodate the ever-growing numbers that the festival attracts.
A range of 40 boutique wine brands from the Cape, high-end fashion, food and creative Sowetan entrepreneurs will be showcased at this year’s festival, which is hosted by Johannesburg Tourism. Local brands and entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to network and sell their products to visitors, fuelling economic growth, development and opportunities for SMMEs, said Vercueil.
The festival is also launching the Soweto Street Food Experience in collaboration with Gauteng Tourism, showcasing tastes of Soweto.
“The Soweto Wine and Lifestyle festival fits in well with Johannesburg Tourism’s marketing strategy, which is to continue to position Johannesburg as a leading global destination all year round” said Vercueil. “Soweto is a destination in its own right and its charisma is something quite special.”
The Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication also commemorates the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Freedom Charter, which was signed in Kliptown.
