The Stellenbosch Harvest Parade returns on February 1 to celebrate the start of the grape harvesting season. This tradition, which dates back nearly half a century, will again bring the local community together in a procession honouring the region’s wine heritage and agricultural workers.
The parade will follow its traditional route from Market Street and wind through the streets of Stellenbosch. The celebration will culminate at the Stellenbosch Town Hall where a short ceremony will include blessing of the harvest and expression of gratitude to the agricultural workers who are integral to the success of the local wine industry.
“The Harvest Parade is one of the most beautiful expressions of our wine culture and community spirit,” said Elmarie Rabe, Manager of Stellenbosch Wine Routes. “It’s not only a celebration of our vineyards and wines but also of the incredible people who make it all possible.”
The event is supported by Stellenbosch Municipality, Cape Winelands District Municipality, Paul Roos KWIKSPAR and AQUASKY – recognising the vital contribution of wine tourism and agriculture to the region’s economy and heritage.
The Harvest Parade coincides with a significant date in South African wine history: the anniversary of the country’s first wine production on February 2, 1659 – marking 366 years of viticultural heritage.
Harvest outlook for 2025
Industry leaders have expressed optimism about the upcoming harvest. Early forecasts from Vinpro and SA Wine Industry Information & Systems predict improved yields compared to last year, thanks to moderate weather conditions and minimal disruption by extreme events.
Louis Strydom, Winemaker at Ernie Els Wines, said: “The spring rain brought significant growth. While there were some challenges with downy mildew, the vineyards were well-protected. We anticipate a larger harvest this year, marking a return to more typical levels after the 20-30% drop in 2024.”
Rianie Strydom, Winemaker at Cavalli, added: “The small berry size we’re seeing is promising. Cooler weather leading up to the harvest is excellent for ripening and optimal fruit development.”
The storm that uprooted trees in the region earlier this year did not impact the vineyards. A tree replanting campaign launched in response to the storm is progressing.
The Stellenbosch Harvest Parade remains a cherished tradition, celebrating not only the abundance of the region’s vineyards but also the resilience and dedication of the people behind its success.
