Thompsons Africa has launched ‘A Life Celebrated Tour’, a 10-night guided tour from Johannesburg to Cape Town, that visits some of the places that were part of Nelson Mandela’s life.
The tour starts with two nights in Johannesburg, with a tour of Soweto on day one that includes a visit to the Hector Pieterson Museum, Mandela House, the Regina Mundi Church, Soccer City, and The Nelson Mandela Foundation.
On day two guests visit Liliesleaf, an interactive museum, and struggle landmark that was the headquarters of the military wing of the African National Congress. Guests then visit The Fort and the women’s prison at Constitution Hill, The Palace of Justice, where the Rivonia Trial was held, and the Union Buildings, where Nelson Mandela took his place as the first democratically elected President of South Africa.
Days three to six are spent travelling to Port Elizabeth via Durban and Umtata. Highlights include a guided talk at Spioenkop, the Anglo-Boer battlefield, and a stop at the Nelson Mandela Capture Monument, and a walk along the Inanda Heritage Route. On the way to Umtata, the tour will travel via Qunu, where Nelson Mandela grew up, and visits the Nelson Mandela Museum. Guests stay the night at Amakhala Private Game Reserve before arriving in Port Elizabeth.
On days seven to nine guests travel on Thompsons Africa’s ‘Garden Route Splendour Tour’ and visit the Tsitsikamma Forest, take a cruise on the Knysna Lagoon, visit the Featherbed Nature Reserve, tour an ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn and visit the Cango Caves.
On day 10 guests travel either via Hermanus, in whale season, or Route 62, to Cape Town. The trip includes a visit Robben Island and the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, before touring the rest of the city and District Six, Table Mountain and the City Hall.
On day 12, guests tour the Winelands, visit the town of Franschhoek, stroll through the university town of Stellenbosch, and travel to Victor Verster Prison, near Paarl, from where Nelson Mandela was released in 1990. The next day is spent at leisure, before transferring to the airport.
