Residents of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe supported tourism in the city during the recent festive season in the absence of international visitors who usually flood the destination at this time of year.
The initiative, co-ordinated by We Are Victoria Falls, mobilised about 100 members of the community to experience the activities that are normally offered to tourists.
“I think it's important to support our industry at the moment because it is the lifeblood of this town. And we all need to just really pull together,” said owner of local business, Africa Addict, Michelle Keefe.
Tourism providers opened their doors to the locals, showcasing the best of the destination’s hidden gems. Experiences included canoeing safaris, game drives, cultural village visits, intimate guesthouse breakfasts, star-gazing, horse-back safaris and tours of the Falls.
“We have been wowed again by our destination and feel renewed with energy to keep fighting,” said Regional Manager of Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, Tsika Mberi.
