SA-based adventure travel company, Tribal Tourist, has launched a new website, making it easy for travellers to discover and book unique tours and activities in Africa.
The site connects travellers with trusted host operators across Africa, and offers a selection of adventures such as safaris, cultural experiences, social adventures for single travellers, family trips and water-based activities.
Tribal Tourist Founder, Matthew Kearns, has travelled for two years connecting with hosts and organisers of these experiences, across Africa. Partnerships have been developed with these adventure companies, which are smaller players, says Kearns, but which offer hard-to-come-by trips such as deep-sea diving off Zanzibar and kayaking in the Okavango.
He says the main aim of the website is to bring more travellers to Africa and help them connect with local communities in a way that benefits the communities. “The new website is an extension of our real-life sustainable tourism practices,” says Kearns. “It brings conscious travellers and operators together, and is packed with content that embodies our shared low-impact ethos.”
The website shows travellers the adventurous side of Africa, says Kearns. “At the same time, we are on a mission to educate them about travelling responsibly and how to tread lightly off-the-beaten-track.”
Central to the website as well, is conservation. The brand partners with host operators who share their low-impact ethos, educate people about how to travel responsibly, as well as support and work with several NGOs connected to tourism in Africa: Waves for Water, Ecobrick Exchange and Families of Fallen Soldiers (rangers who have been killed fighting poachers).
Currently, the majority of travellers using Tribal Tourist come from the USA, Canada and Germany. The site accepts online payments from customers around the world, and features community-generated reviews of the adventures on offer.
