The expansion of Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, Zambia, is 35% complete, the Zambia Airports Corporation Limited has revealed.
The work includes the construction of an international terminal building with six air bridges, which will be able handle four million passengers; a 30-room transit hotel; and another 70-room hotel. New taxiways, aprons, rescue and fire services stations, landside and airside driveways and an air traffic control tower will also be constructed. A new shopping centre and office complex on Airport Road are also planned.
Communications and Brand Manager, Mweembe Sikaulu, said there was continued interest from various airlines in destination Zambia, testimony to its growth potential.
“The commencement of Qatar Airways flights will create an alternative option for connection through the Middle East, which will ease network connectivity beyond Doha and open new opportunities in tourism.”
The expansion project was initially expected to be completed in 2018, but the contractors have said the project will be completed by the end of 2017.
