Kwandwe Private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape, a member of Relais & Chateaux, has announced the birth of another black rhino calf.
Rangers suspected the new arrival when they spotted the black rhino cow’s previous two calves out on their own. Since their reintroduction onto the 22 000 hectare reserve in 2001, all of the cows have each given birth to three calves and Kwandwe now supports a healthy, growing population of these highly endangered animals. The succulent thicket of Kwandwe provides them with ideal nutrition. The reserve has both black and white rhino.
Kwandwe, meaning "Place of the Blue Crane" in Xhosa, is also home to threatened species of birds such as the blue crane, crowned eagle and the Knysna woodpecker.
