Thompsons Africa has launched South African food heritage cooking experiences that include a variety of cultures and history from the Cape of Good Hope.
The Cape Malay cooking experience includes a guided walking tour of the Bo-Kaap, a visit to the local museum, and an informal cooking workshop in a family home to learn how food, history and religion are connected in the Bo-Kaap culture.
Bread baking in the Winelands includes a visit to wine estates where visitors shape different doughs, take a cellar tour and enjoy wine tasting. This is followed by a light lunch and stroll down the main road of Franschhoek.
The African cooking safari experience takes visitors to the urban township of Gugulethu and surrounds where they explore African food, beverages and culture with an informal cooking experience, also in a local family’s home. Visitors hear stories about socio-economic upliftment and success, as well as the challenges of the past, present and future, and visit spaza shops (informal stores). Visitors also visit surrounding wine estates and experience wine blending and food pairing with Ntsiki Biyela, the first black female head winemaker in the country.
Half- and full-day options are available and transfers to and from Cape Town are included.
