Thirty-two accommodation establishments in Rosebank have joined forces to market themselves together on one platform and attempt to establish Rosebank as a tourist hub.
The website www.johannesburg-guesthouses.co.za, which was launched last year, focuses on Gauteng’s original 'garden suburbs' known locally as the ‘parks’. All establishments are located to the north of the Johannesburg Central Business District and on the southern edge of the Sandton CBD around the central hub of Rosebank.
According to Chairman, Tony Sparks: “This is a valuable marketing tool as well as an opportunity to network the possibilities and lobby our interests together. Last year the tourism ministry revealed that 70% of all tourism volume was derived from domestic tourism and we need to ensure that South Africans begin to see the possibilities for enjoying their stay right here in the gardens of Johannesburg.”
The criteria for membership are stringent, ensuring quality accommodation and exceptional service from each partner, whether it’s a boutique lodge, B&B accommodation or self-catering cottage.
The website offers an online accommodation booking facility as well as a 14-day availability schedule. There is advice on tourist attractions such as museums, culture and heritage, entertainment, shopping, nature and parks.
“Joburg is seldom considered a tourist destination and we’re hoping to change that by demonstrating the wealth of activities, experiences, people and places the city offers. This is why our members are passionate about convincing tourists to spend more time in our beautiful suburban metropolis,” he said.
