Mziki Safari Lodge, a family-friendly wilderness retreat near Pilanesberg National Park, has become the epicentre of a ground-breaking conservation effort.

The lodge's associated 6 000-hectare private game reserve is now home to Edie, the first cheetah born in Australia to be rewilded in Africa. This historic move not only marks a significant step in cheetah conservation but also introduces vital new genetics to the African cheetah population.

Edie, born at the Wild Cat Conservation Centre in Sydney in 2022, has successfully completed her phased return to the wild at Mziki. The reserve's unique environment, free from lions and hyenas and with a low leopard population, provides an ideal setting for Edie's reintroduction.

Edie's return to the wild was conducted in phases to ensure her successful adaptation. She underwent fitness training, dietary adjustments, and predatory skills development at the Wild Cat Conservation Centre. Upon arrival in Africa, Edie acclimated to the new environment and prey types through progressive introductions to various sized enclosures. This method sharpened her instincts and prepared her for survival in the wild.

Ben Britton, Wild Cat Conservation Centre Founder said: "Since the inception of the centre eight years ago, our goal has always been to return cats back to the wild. The cheetahs we originally brought to Australia were DNA tested to ensure not only were they as varied as possible, but that their genetics were also suitable for any progeny to return to Africa, with our insurance population here in Australia helping to safeguard the long-term future of Africa's remaining cheetah population."

This international collaboration involves partners from across the globe, including WeWild Africa, The Metapopulation Initiative, and the Wild Cat Conservation Centre in Sydney. Edie's arrival is part of a larger initiative to bolster cheetah populations and genetic diversity in southern Africa.

"Welcoming Edie is a surreal and amazing moment for us," says Philip Pallamar, Director of Mziki. "She's not just our first predator on the reserve; she represents the beginning of a new chapter in our conservation efforts."

This historic event coincides with Mziki Safari Lodge's recent extensive renovations and upgrades, enhancing its appeal as a premier safari destination for families and wildlife enthusiasts.

Over the past two years, Mziki Safari Lodge has undergone a remarkable transformation. The lodge now offers three brand-new two-bedroom family suites, featuring a master bedroom with a king-sized bed and a second bedroom with twin beds, making them ideal for families or small groups.

The suites' joint bathrooms are a highlight, offering both indoor and outdoor shower options for an immersive nature experience, as well as a luxurious bathtub for those seeking ultimate relaxation after a day of wildlife viewing.

The existing garden chalets and traditional rondavels have not been overlooked in this renovation. These popular accommodations have been thoughtfully upgraded, enhancing their comfort and style.

At the heart of the lodge, the main building has undergone a complete redesign, creating a more open and welcoming space for guests to gather, dine, and relax. The new open-plan dining area encourages a communal atmosphere, perfect for sharing safari stories and enjoying gourmet meals. A central fireplace adds warmth and ambiance, ideal for cozy evenings and early morning gatherings before game drives.

The addition of a new curio shop allows guests to take home a piece of their African adventure, while a dedicated children's corner, complete with a library, caters to younger visitors, fostering their interest in wildlife and conservation from an early age.

Beyond the physical improvements, Mziki has also enriched its wildlife offerings. The introduction of new species to the reserve, including the headline-making Edie and a group of sable antelope, has added new dimensions to the game viewing experience. These additions not only enhance the biodiversity of the reserve but also contribute to broader conservation efforts, positioning Mziki at the forefront of responsible ecotourism.
