Contrary to popular belief, luxury doesn’t have to come at the expense of sustainability, and at Virgin Limited Edition all teams have been working hard to make sure one doesn’t compromise the other. Our approach includes a commitment to responsible supply chain management, fair trade policies, ethical dealings with our employees as well as the local community, and of course the environment.
Sustainability is high on the agenda at Ulusaba, our South African Game Reserve, and the team is committed to working with suppliers who believe in fair trade practices and source partners locally where possible. Ulusaba’s highly skilled chefs source their fish from sustainable varieties as per the World Wildlife Foundation standards.
Conserving and protecting the natural environment is another of Ulusaba’s main priorities and the expert team of Rangers and Trackers is committed to operating with minimal impact. Initiatives include avoiding unnecessary off-road driving to protect endangered plant species, helping protect animals from poachers and monitoring the health of wildlife.
Mahali Mzuri is located on the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy within Kenya’s Maasai Mara ecosystem. The basic concept of a conservancy is to guarantee a fair income to every landowning member regardless of tourism numbers. The key priorities are to have a minimal footprint on the land and to promote high value, low density tourism which creates less pressure on the environment. Governed by a rule of 1 bed to every 142 hectares in the conservancy, Mahali Mzuri restricts the number of visitors and vehicles allowed into the area at any one time. Guides are also governed by a strict code of conduct. In doing this Mahali Mzuri can manage the impact of tourism on the environment and provide visitors with a uniquely natural safari experience.
Located on a 37 hectare vineyard, Mont Rochelle is in a unique position to be able to serve a range of high quality wines that are produced entirely on-site. The hotel and its two restaurants also serve food and wines purchased from nearby producers, supporting local businesses and economies. It’s all about local sourcing to ensure maximum economic benefit to the community and minimal transport and ‘food miles’. In addition, Mont Rochelle is committed to responsible supply chain management, fair trade policies, ethical dealings with employees as well as the local community, and of course the environment. Like other properties, Mont Rochelle has eliminated the need for plastic bottles, and now serves filtered water in branded glass bottles which are washable and can be reused again and again.
