South Africa’s Tourism Sector Masterplan – which proposes seven key interventions to bolster the sector – has recently been approved and published in the Government Gazette.
But not all are convinced of the plan in its current form. In the latest Tourism Update poll, the majority of participating readers (57%) said it would not assist in addressing the barriers to tourism in South Africa, whereas only 11% said it would.
The remaining 33% voted ‘maybe’.
Will tourists pay a ‘lion protection fee’?
The independent source of news and views from the academic and research community in Africa, The Conversation, recently conducted a study to find out whether visitors to South Africa were willing to pay ‘lion protection fee’ to help stop trophy hunting in the country.
It spoke to 907 people who were visiting, or planned to visit the country, and found that a high percentage – over 80% – were in favour of the idea of a lion protection fee.
Tourism Update is now inviting the industry to vote on the matter.
