After two years of successfully operating morning and afternoon out rides from the Great Plains Conservation Ride Kenya Mara stables, the 16 horses located in the Maasai Mara will be moved, starting February 1, to join the existing herd of the Ride Kenya Chyulu Hills stables at ol Donyo Lodge.
Great Plains Conservation says that while it regrets not being able to continue offering horse riding in the Maasai Mara, it recognises this as an ideal opportunity to strengthen the Chyulu Hills as one of the finest riding centres in Africa and, by extension, confirm ol Donyo Lodge as one of the best multi-activity wildlife viewing safari centres in Kenya.
Guests of ol Donyo Lodge can take part in the following complimentary wildlife viewing activities under the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding Chyulu Hills:
- Morning or afternoon horse riding for riders of all experience levels from novice to expert, fully kitted with choice of Western, Trail or English saddles. High-quality riding clothing includes jodhpurs, breeches, helmets, half-chaps, boots and gloves;
- Mountain biking on the plains between the Chyulu Hills and Mount Kilimanjaro;
- Exploring some of the longest extinct lava tunnels in the world;
- Guided walking;
- Day and night game drives in 300 000 acres of wildlife areas owned by local Maasai;
- A log pile hide and a new sunken hide overlooking the waterholes below the lodge;
- Guided running on the plains (a vehicle follows for safety);
- Sleep under the stars on roof-top star beds, on top of each suite;
- Bush breakfasts and kopjie (hill) sundowners;
- Cool down in either the main pool or private suite swimming pools;
- Engage in conservation discussions with our partners at the Big Life Foundation, including anti-poaching exercises with their dogs and handlers (small donation required);
