The Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA) and Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) have announced a strategic partnership aimed at promoting responsible tourism practices across South Africa.
This collaboration seeks to equip tourism businesses with practical tools and resources to meet growing global demand for sustainable travel experiences while supporting local communities.
Rachel Nxele, Chairperson of SATSA’s Responsible Tourism Committee, emphasised the importance of the initiative: “This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for sustainable tourism in South Africa. It equips our members with essential tools to meet evolving global market demands while benefiting local communities.”
The partnership will focus on several key initiatives, including:
- Endorsement of FTT’s certification programme: Locally developed and aligned with international sustainability standards, the certification provides a clear framework for businesses to implement responsible practices.
- Educational webinars: Bi-monthly sessions featuring industry leaders will provide actionable insights and strategies for integrating sustainable practices into business operations.
- Networking opportunities: Platforms for tourism professionals to connect, share best practices and collaborate in responsible tourism efforts.
- Practical resources: Development of targeted tools designed to address unique challenges and opportunities in Southern Africa’s tourism sector.
Lisa Scriven, General Manager of FTT, highlighted the significance of the collaboration: “The FTT framework and support tools offer tourism businesses of any size a comprehensive, step-by-step approach to align their operations with supplier demand. Equally important, it promotes tourism that contributes to better places to live, work and visit.”
This partnership is a significant step forward in fostering a sustainable and competitive tourism industry in South Africa, ensuring businesses can adapt to changing market expectations while creating meaningful benefits for local communities.
“FTT is excited to partner with SATSA, collaboratively championing responsible tourism and making a lasting impact on our industry,” said Scriven.
