SIX suspected abalone poachers were arrested and 2 544 abalone confiscated after a high-speed car chase through Simon’s Town on the Cape Peninsula early on Thursday morning, reports Table Mountain National Park (TMNP). The suspects were taken to the Simon’s Town police station and will remain in custody pending a court appearance. Authorities had observed the suspects since Wednesday afternoon poaching abalone on the coast between Simon’s Town and Cape Point. More than 400 individuals have been arrested for poaching marine resources since the inception of a Marine Protected Area in 2004. At least eight SANParks have experienced poaching in the last month. On Tuesday, TMNP rangers arrested a man suspected of breaking into a car on Tafelberg Road near Table Mountain, while rangers patrolling in the vicinity of Scarborough arrested a man in possession of goods stolen from a house in Castle Rock.
