The Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg has brought a replica of the Lascaux cave paintings to South Africa. The replicas are currently on display at the Wonders of Rock Art exhibition, up until October 1.
The cave paintings, found in 1940 in the Lascaux Caves in southwestern France, are around 17 000 years old, and are regarded as masterpieces for their quality and sophistication.
The replica artwork will be exhibited alongside prehistoric South African rock art. It is the first time an exhibition of this kind has taken place anywhere in the world.
Dr More Chakane, Sci-Bono Discovery Centre CEO, says: “The combined exhibition will be seen nowhere else on earth. The masterpieces by our own African ancestors, viewed alongside those of the ancient Paleolithic Europeans, provide a unique opportunity to experience the very earliest dawn of human creativity.”
The exhibition is on at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg.
