A 26-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder and hijacking in connection with the death of a UK tourist in a Cape Town township at the weekend, the province’s Ministry of Community Safety confirmed.

The man is to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court on November 18.

Anni Dewani was killed on Saturday night after the taxi she and her husband Shrien were travelling in was hijacked by two gunmen in Gugulethu township near Cape Town. Shrien and the driver were released unharmed. The couple had been honeymooning in Cape Town.
