Tsogo Sun is to spend at least R500m on upgrading two of its key Cape Town hotels, says John van Rooyen, Tsogo Sun’s Operations Director for the Cape region. 
Speaking at the recent Cape Town Tourism (CTT) AGM, he announced that the company would spend R400m on revamping the 30-year-old Southern Sun Cape Sun hotel in central Cape Town. He said this would include, among other things, new signage and lighting and the refurbishments of bedrooms, bathrooms and corridors. Upon enquiry, the company declined to comment further, saying that timings and details of the refurbishment have not been finalised yet.
Meanwhile, R100m is currently being spent on refurbishing the 546-room Southern Sun Waterfront at the entrance to the V&A Waterfront. The project is scheduled for completion by the beginning of December next year. 
Van Rooyen says the refurbishment will enhance the hotel’s service delivery, update its facilities and give it a fresh new look. Phase one is under way and involves the modernisation of the porte cochère, the repainting of the art deco façade and the makeover of the lobby restrooms. Nine suites are being added and all existing bedrooms and bathrooms are being refurbished in colourful Bo-Kaap style.  He says the bedrooms will receive additional storage space, a larger workspace for business travellers, high-speed WiFi and a mini-bar fridge that will be stocked on request.
