SA Tourism has partnered with three celebrated Durban artists to paint a 22m wall mural inside the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Conference Centre, which will be unveiled on May 2 during Africa’s Travel Indaba.
Sthembiso Dlamini, Acting CEO of SA Tourism, explains: “We know that travellers from all over the world are keen to learn about the history and culture of any destination they visit. This wall mural is the creative expression of our culture and beautiful landscapes. It is also a celebration of South Africa’s talent.”
The mural represents the KwaZulu Natal lifestyle and showcases culture from the region, from its world-famous beaches to landmarks such as the Moses Mabhida stadium where a number of cultural and significant events are hosted.
“This mural we are painting is a celebration of Durban as a beautiful destination with vibrant people from many different cultures. The art piece will have a street art aesthetic that is very engaging and exciting for people to look at. We want to tell this story through the mural and giving life to a place that we love by showcasing the Durban beach front where a lot of different people co-exist and share that space,” says Samora Chapman, one of the artists involved.
The mural is part of Africa’s Travel Indaba’s theme of telling African success stories to change the dominant narrative of Africa into one that’s positive.
