Air Namibia is focusing on fleet renewal and increasing frequencies and capacity on its regional and domestic routes and is awaiting appointment of a new md.
Commercial manager in South Africa, Margaret de Gois, says domestically, the airline has increased its capacity by replacing its 19-seat Beechcraft B1900 with three 37-seat Embraer ERJ-137s. They will also fly on regional routes from Johannesburg to Walvis Bay, Cape Town to Walvis Bay, and the Windhoek, Maun, Victoria Falls circular route.
De Gois says the airline is sourcing replacements for two Airbus A340-300 aircraft being used on the Windhoek-Frankfurt and Windhoek-Luanda routes.
Air Namibia is also looking at the Airbus A319 or a suitable Boeing alternative as a possible replacement for three B737-500s operating on its regional routes to Johannesburg, Luanda, Lusaka and Cape Town.
On March 28, the airline will introduce a service from Windhoek to Rundu. On April 15, it introduces a six times a week service from Johannesburg to Walvis Bay and increases frequencies from three to six direct flights a week from Cape Town to Walvis Bay. Services to Luanda will be increased from four to five a week at a date yet to be confirmed.
De Gois says Air Namibia has increased its market share on the Cape Town/Windhoek; Cape Town/Walvis Bay; Johannesburg/Windhoek and Johannesburg/Accra routes. Competition on Johannesburg/Lusaka is tough but business is picking up. Revenue on the Luanda and Frankfurt routes has been good as they are dollar and euro based.
She says the airline is still considering other international routes. In Africa, it is keen to add more destinations, such as its current through-fares with Virgin Nigeria on the Accra/Lagos and with Emirates on the Accra/Abidjan route.
Meanwhile, its Rewards frequent flyer programme has gone electronic and a special corporate frequent flyer programme has been introduced. Passengers can now book online and e-tickets can be issued on all its routes. Cellphone check-in is available but due to passport procedures still to be introduced by Acsa, the service is not yet fully operational.
