The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway was now fully operational under new operating hours, following an incident involving protestors on Wednesday morning, said MD, Wahida Parker. Staff members affiliated to the South African Commercial Catering Workers Union (SACCAWU) have been on strike after failing to reach a settlement on annual salary increases.
Protesting staff blocked the road in front of the cableway on Wednesday morning. Although the South African Police Service were able to intervene and clear the road, a number of tour operators and buses were turned away. “By 09h00 we were fully operational, and a number of tour operators and buses came back once the road was reopened,” said Parker.
Operational hours have been changed to winter operating hours for the duration of the strike, where the cableway opens an hour later and closes an hour earlier. The top station kiosk, visitor centre and WiFi lounge will be closed during the strike period.
“We remain hopeful that it is something we can and must resolve,” added Parker.
