In New York they have the gift of the gab, in London ‘The Knowledge’ but in Cape Town taxi drivers are now qualified tour guides.
At least 39 metered cab drivers last week received National Certificates in Tourism after successfully completing a three-month training course sponsored by the national Department of Transport and Public Works. Western Cape MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Alan Winde, lauded the initiative, saying taxi drivers often were the first people encountered by tourists. As registered and recognised tour guides they would act as ambassadors to the destination and be able to extend their own earning potential.
