Cape Town's Sea Point Civic centre is being turned into a home away from home for about 5 200 Brazilian soccer fans who have chosen to make the city their base for the duration of the FIFA World Cup.
Brazilian décor, dancers in carnival costumes, Brazilian food, Brazilian music, matches screened in Portuguese and live Internet streaming to web surfers will turn the venue into ‘Casa little Brazil’, which means the home of the little Brazil, all sponsored by the provincial government and marketing organisation, Cape Town Routes Unlimited.
CTRU believes the project has the potential to place Cape Town and the Western Cape top of mind in Brazil, the 2014 World Cup hosts, because about 200m Brazilians, 80% of whom have access to email, will be keeping a close watch on off-the-ball happenings in South Africa during the World Cup.
