PLANS to launch Cape Town’s first eco-friendly transport solution for the tourism sector are under way.
The Green Cab company employs regular petrol vehicles that have been converted to operate on a dual-fuel system, using liquid petroleum gas (LPG). LPG reduces harmful emissions into the environment by up to 87% compared with petrol.
The Green Cab’s fleet comprises 20 vehicles, including 10-seaters and sedan vehicles. The 10-seater vehicles will predominantly service the business tourism sector while the smaller vehicles will be used to provide transfers, tours and shuttle services to passengers travelling in and around the city.
The company will primarily employ women drivers who are registered tour guides. This will contribute to redressing the current under-representation of women in the transport sector. Drivers will have advanced driver and first aid training.
Green Cab is awaiting its licence approval and hopes to begin operations by mid-year.
