Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) recorded a 9.5% increase in visitor numbers over the festive season with 232 420 entries across gates and picnic sites in December 2024 compared to 213 160 in 2023. The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway also saw significant growth with 130 675 visitors – a 19.4% rise from the previous year.
Despite higher footfall, crime incidents remained stable with 60 reported cases across November, December and January compared to 64 incidents the previous year. Notably, robberies decreased by 40% due to the combined efforts of law enforcement agencies and interventions by South African National Parks (SANParks). Reported crimes included theft from persons and vehicles, attempted robberies and environmental offences such as poaching and plant theft.
Fire incidents also declined: 92 fires have been recorded to date in the 2024/5 financial year compared to 119 in 2023/4. SANParks used a combination of ground crews, fire trucks and aerial surveillance, including a helicopter seconded from Kruger National Park, to contain fires swiftly. The park’s fire response teams successfully contained 83% of fires within 90 minutes.
TMNP reminds visitors to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines including:
- Hiking, biking or climbing in groups of four or more.
- Accessing the park only between sunrise and sunset.
- Wearing appropriate clothing and carrying a fully charged phone.
- Using tracking apps and informing someone of travel plans.
- Checking SANParks social media for updates on closures and fire risks.
SANParks expressed appreciation for the collaboration with the City of Cape Town, South African Police Service, Volunteer Wildfire Services, Volunteer Safety Services, National Sea Rescue Institute, Honorary Rangers, Western Cape Disaster Management and other key partners in maintaining safety and conservation efforts.
