With a number of local transmissions (people who haven’t travelled but still confirmed as testing positive for COVID-19), Tourism Update brings you the latest updates.
We also appeal to our readers to send us any updates you may have – particularly from SADC and East Africa. We’re striving to keep all our readers updated with the very latest news but please note that sometimes information changes very quickly and we don’t always receive the updates timeously.
Your help in that regard is therefore invaluable.
Cape Town closes several attractions/facilities
City of Cape Town is closing several facilities as a precaution against the spread of COVID-19.
“We have taken note of best practice from other affected countries and the success they have found in social distancing and improved hygiene practices,” said Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Dan Plato.
Affected facilities include camping sites, museums, art centres, stadiums, resorts, picnic spots, city sports fields and nature reserves.
“As the Premier of this province, it pains me to implement restrictions on our citizens, especially as they affect the economy and children, but I am willing to take these steps to keep as many of our citizens COVID-19 free as possible,” said Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde.
“We plead for their understanding and request the support of municipal facility management committees to ensure that all non-essential contact is avoided and that social distancing is strictly enforced,” said Plato, adding that all public meetings and non-critical meetings, gatherings and site visits will be postponed indefinitely.
Western Cape officials have also initiated a media campaign called ‘Let’s Stop the Spread’, which includes radio advertisements, social media strategies and direct text messaging.
“The situation is being assessed on a daily basis and is subject to frequent and rapid change,” concluded Plato.

ZITF postponed
The 2020 Zimbabwe International Trade Fair and other events have been postponed indefinitely.
“All these activities will resume as soon as we are satisfied that our nation is no longer at risk,” said Zimbabwean President, Emmerson Mnangagwa.
To date, Zimbabwe has not recorded any COVID-19 case.
The President added that resources originally earmarked for these events would now be redirected toward strengthening the country’s defences against the COVID-19 strain of coronavirus, and toward drought mitigation.
