Cape Town has been named one of the world’s top destinations for digital nomads in 2025, ranking 6th out of 25 cities on a global list compiled by Big 7 Travel/Enjoy Travel. The ranking considered factors such as internet speed, safety, co-working spaces, cost of living, visa availability and community engagement for remote workers.
Cape Town stands out for its unique blend of natural beauty, vibrant city life and affordability. Digital nomads can enjoy high-speed internet, co-working spaces like Workshop 17 and a growing community of remote workers. The city’s cost of living is estimated at around €1 100 per month, making it a competitive option compared to other global hubs.
A key factor in Cape Town’s appeal is South Africa’s remote work visa launched in May 2024. This visa allows remote workers to live in South Africa for up to three years while working for international companies. Applicants must meet an income requirement of €33 372 per year. Visa applications and renewals must be submitted in person at a South African embassy or visa facilitation services centre in the applicant’s home country.
According to Big 7 Travel, Cape Town offers remote workers an ideal balance of adventure and affordability. “No need to choose between the mountains or the beach – you can have both in Cape Town.”
The city also benefits from regular digital nomad meet-ups, a strong entrepreneurial culture and a range of outdoor activities. While the visa application process can take two to four months, the long-term benefits of living and working in Cape Town make it an attractive option for remote workers looking for a base in Africa.
