The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) has confirmed temporary closure of the Ngorongoro and Ndutu airstrips from April 8 for two months. The closure will facilitate renovation and infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving safety and service standards.
The affected airstrips serve the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Ndutu Plains, which are key access points for the northern safari circuit and popular during the Great Migration season.
According to a notice from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, the renovation includes runway resurfacing and extension, upgraded navigation systems, construction of new terminal facilities and the introduction of environmental management systems.
During the renovation period, flights to and from Ngorongoro and Ndutu will be suspended. Tour operators are advised to make alternative travel arrangements using nearby airstrips such as Lake Manyara, Seronera and Karatu.
In a statement, the NCAA acknowledged the potential inconvenience caused by the closure but emphasised the necessity of the upgrades to meet modern aviation standards.
