A passenger flying into South Africa has expressed concern that not all travellers entering the country are being screened according to the Department of Health’s anti-Ebola measures.
The passenger travelled on a KLM flight that arrived before the weekend at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg.
According to the passenger, although airline cabin crew handed out compulsory Department of Health forms to arriving passengers, there was nobody at Home Affairs Immigration who collected the statements. Tourism Update is in possession of the form filled out by the passenger.
Furthermore, the passenger said the fever screen that scans the faces of arriving passengers was operative but not manned.
The Department of Health recently confirmed that there were no cases of Ebola in SA. “The risk of Ebola being introduced into South Africa remains low. There are a number of measures that have been put in place at South African ports of entry as well as medical facilities in South Africa to identify persons at risk with fever from the affected countries,” it said in a statement.
At the time of publication, neither the Department of Health nor the Department of Home Affairs had responded to requests for comment.
