Isibindi Africa has taken its community involvement to a new level, with a partnership to create a new company, Isibindi Africa Trails, that offers walking activities and which will introduce overnight walking trails next year.
The company was approached by young professional trails guide, Nunu Jobe, with a concept for guided trails with a strong emphasis on the inclusion of local communities.
Nunu's philosophy that “human fences are more effective than wire fences" proposes that communities neighbouring game reserves potentially offered the best protection for these areas. The idea of focusing on creating economic and social benefits at various community levels along with a passion for educating the youth in conservation matters struck a chord with Brett Gehren, MD of Isibindi.
Walking activities commenced from Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge in December 2015.
Isibindi Africa Trails has started in partnership between Isibindi and JObe and includes Shaun Maitre, a long-time friend and mentor to Nunu. The next step, to begin extended trails over-nighting in either bush lodges or tented camps, is still in the incubation phase, with concession negotiations well under way.
Unlike lodges, trails are able to commence quite quickly and Isibindi Africa Trails anticipates beginning with test runs during the summer months, with the goal to be operational by March next year.
