Farmers in Botswana are trying to prevent their crops being destroyed by elephants by installing brightly coloured disco lights along their fences.

Botswana based NGO, Elephants Without Borders (EWB) has devised the EleSenses toolkit, solar-powered strobe lights along the edge of fields that sense movement, creating a colourful pattern that can be changed every week to startle the animals.

Botswana safari operator, Desert & Delta Safaris, has created the CARES Movement, designed to support the EWB project. Until August 31, 10% of all revenue from any new safaris booked on open-dated vouchers will be donated to the cause.

“There has been a lot of unfortunate news about elephant conservation in Botswana over the last few months. However, there is some really positive work going into community and conservation initiatives like this and we want to do what we can to support their work,” said Desert & Delta Marketing Director, James Wilson. 

The long-term survival of elephants in Botswana depends on improved coexistence between elephants and people, and Desert & Delta Safaris prides itself as being first and foremost a local citizen development organisation operating a responsible travel company.
