A new documentary, Vanishing Kings – Lions of the Namib, traces the story of survival of a small population of lions that live in the arid conditions of the northern Namib Desert.
It was filmed in and around Wilderness Safaris’ Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp, in Kunene.
Acclaimed wildlife filmmakers, Will and Lianne Steenkamp spent nearly two years filming this hour-long documentary about an old lioness, her two daughters and five adolescent sons, known as the ‘Five Musketeers’.
The film also focuses on the efforts of Dr Flip Stander, of Desert Lion Conservation, who has devoted his life to researching and protecting these rare animals.
“We are very proud to have been able to support the creation of this extraordinary documentary by offering access to some remote areas around our camp where these lion can be found. This, together with the initial funding and continued support of Dr Flip Stander’s Desert Lion Conservation project through the Wilderness Wildlife Trust, is a strong statement of our company’s support and commitment, not only to these projects, but also to the conservation efforts in Namibia,” says Mike Wassung, CEO of Wilderness Safaris Namibia.
