Rolls-Royce and Bentley will be the central feature of the 28th annual George Old Car Show scheduled for February 8. The event, organised by the Southern Cape Old Car Club (SCOCC), will focus on British motoring heritage with a special section dedicated to these iconic marques.
“The time was ripe to give these cars their turn under the spotlight,” said Waldo Scribante, Chairman of the SCOCC. “A large number of our members own British classics and we are also expecting strong participation from enthusiasts along the coastline.”
On Field D at Eden Technical High School in George, there will be a collection of Rolls-Royce and Bentley models, including notable classics such as the 1936 Bentley 4¼ litre saloon owned by member Pierre Malherbe. He recently completed a 1 200km heritage tour in the vehicle described as a reliable performer on long journeys.
This year, the show will shift to a one-day format due to poor attendance on the Sundays of previous events. Scribante said many exhibitors travel long distances and need to return home early on Sunday, leaving gaps in the displays. “We felt it wasn’t fair for spectators who attended on Sunday to see only part of the show,” he said. The 2025 event will run extended hours on the Saturday from 9am to 6pm.
Celebrating British automobiles
While Rolls-Royce and Bentley will be the headline attractions, the show will also feature other British marques such as Austin, Morris, Jaguar, MG and Lotus. These brands have significant followings in South Africa with models like the Austin 7, Morris Minor and Jaguar E-Type enduring favourites among collectors.
Other highlights will include a display of vintage motorcycles, which has grown significantly in recent years, as well as pre-1930 vehicles participating in the traditional Vet Tour. The SCOCC is also considering a post-show tour to explore scenic areas of the Overstrand region.
