Welgevonden Game Reserve in South Africa’s Limpopo province has extended its closure to at least March 31.
The reserve has been closed since March 1 as a result of flood damage that rendered primary access roads impassable.
Welgevonden Game Reserve COO Neil Davison said, in a press statement, that rains continue to fall in the region, preventing repairs and road reconstruction.
“Most of our roads remain severely compromised and, in many cases, unsafe. Our teams have been working to maintain safe emergency access routes on and off the reserve but, with progress slowed by continued rainfall, the difficult decision was made to extend the reserve’s closure,” said Davison.
Davison said negotiations are underway with provincial governments to repair roads to the reserve’s four access gates.
“Maximising this time is important while we remain closed to all visitors,” said Davison.
