Tourism Update readers are fairly evenly split over whether South Africa’s newly-inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Sites will boost tourism to the country.
The new sites – the Human Rights, Liberation and Reconciliation: Nelson Mandela Sites and The Pleistocene Occupation Sites in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal – were inscribed during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi, India, which took place from July 21 to 31.
Responding to our latest poll, 44% of readers said that the inscriptions would not boost tourist arrivals to South Africa, while 36% said that they would. The remaining 20% of respondents selected “Maybe”.
Are women well-represented in tourism leadership?
As South Africa marks Women’s Month, now is a pertinent time to reflect on the progress made in the representation of women in positions of leadership within both the public and private sectors.
In a Tourism Update poll conducted last year, 47% of readers said that women were well-represented in top management roles and/or ownership positions.
Since then, the appointments of Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille, Deputy Minister Maggie Sotyu, and SA Tourism CEO Nombulelo Guliwe are reflective of government’s commitment to putting women at the helm of policy decision-making and governance.
