Hermanus and its neighbouring villages have been included in the Unesco Creative Cities Network.
Unesco named the municipal area of the Overstrand as a Creative City of Gastronomy - the third South African destination, after Cape Town and Durban, to achieve this recognition.
Hermanus now takes its place alongside international cities of Gastronomy like Parma, Italy; San Antonio, the USA; Phuket, Thailand; and Bergen, Norway.
The ocean drive from Rooiels to Kleinmond and onward to Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai has been turned into a “culinary coastline”, with many small producers, farmers, wineries, breweries, farm stalls and eateries.
Cape Whale Coast Tourism says this win “is a showcase of government and private sector collaboration, where political buy-in was needed as well as the extensive demonstration of how local businesses are delivering on the culinary experience”.
