The William Moffett Expressway Bridge in Nelson Mandela Bay, Gqeberha, recently underwent an extensive and very colourful refurbishment.
The bridge is now adorned with handrails in the colours of the rainbow, with each colour representing a global problem that residents are encouraged to take heed of. Health and environmental awareness posters in matching colours have also been permanently erected on the bridge.
The R1.2m (€69 000) renovation aims to raise awareness and promote a healthy, conscious lifestyle in reaction to world hunger (orange), road safety (yellow), environmental awareness (green), water conservation (blue), cancer (pink), and COVID-19 (grey).
Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, Nqaba Bhanga, says it is a campaign to save lives, and encourages residents to take note of the messages represented by the bridge and know their HIV status, get tested for COVID-19 if necessary, undergo regular cancer screening, and save water.
“This is but one of many projects that we are undertaking across the metro. We are also fixing potholes and improving our stormwater drainage system. This is a metro at work,” Bhanga added, as originally reported by News 24.
