Visitors to Cape Town’s Sea Point Promenade should be on the lookout for the attraction’s newest art installation. The sculpture, ‘The tale of the snail and the whale’, is inspired by a children’s picture book that tells the story of a tiny snail’s trip around the world on the tail of a humpback whale.

Created by local artist Marco Olivier and based on the book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Sheffler, the life-size sculpture took nearly six months to complete. The artwork is now a popular photo opportunity among visitors who pass through Sea Point.

The installation is the latest product of a partnership between the Recreation and Parks Department and the Friends of Sea Point Pavilion, a registered non-profit organisation.

“The City values the partnership and extraordinary work that officials and the friends group are doing together. It shows just how much can be achieved through communication, planning and passion for protecting outdoor community assets that offer unlimited recreation that everyone can enjoy,” says Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
