Tourism KwaZulu Natal (TKZN) has identified religious tourism as an important niche market, especially when considering that the province expected an estimated 250 000 domestic and 60 000 international visitors during the recent Easter season.
Phindile Makwakwa, TKZN acting CEO, says while places of worship are busy during religious holidays, they are also worthwhile venues for tourists to explore year round.
“You can visit the many mission stations dotted about the province, most being off-shoots from the Trappist Mariannhill Monastery outside Durban. The Centocow Mission in Underberg, the Durban Holocaust & Genocide Centre at the Durban Jewish Club and adjacent Garden of Remembrance are good choices to add to an itinerary.”
Visitors can also take a quiet moment at the Buddhist Retreat Centre near Ixopo or the Jummah Mosque in Durban.
