Right at the edge of this Unesco World Heritage Site, Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp, with its brand-new safari tents, sits amongst the region’s acacia trees. Facing south into the crown of the forest canopy, the camp has a unique perspective on the extinct volcano landscape.
First-class comfort in the crater
All 10 of the classic canvas tents have been beautifully decorated and furnished with an earthy natural palette, highlighted with reddish-brown accents and the pale yellows of acacia blossom, complementing the biodiversity of this terrain.
Each tent has an en-suite bathroom, designed for contemporary tastes, with an indoor shower. All accessories are available, including hairdryers, plug points and gym bags – which contain a yoga mat, weights, skipping rope and a resistance band. The chic tents allude to a ‘glamping’ experience, and include wooden-framed furniture, luxurious beds, and designer pieces such as butterfly chairs in rich dark browns.
Elevated communal spaces
A new lounge area, dining room with linen-covered tables and sparkling tableware, and wraparound decking have been created — all raised up to ensure panoramic views over the flat-topped acacias. Soft fabric flowing down from the tent-top adds elegance, with the sofas and armchairs complemented by the striking photography on show.
Outside, an expansive terrace wraps around a firepit in a semicircle of seats – perfect to enjoy a social evening around the fire.
Superb personal service
Each private abode has a designated attendant who brings tea and coffee first thing in the morning and ensures the camp shower is the perfect temperature whenever required. Meals are carefully prepared with the best ingredients; lunches are light and fresh, making use of African spices; while dinners are often made up of hearty curries or stews.
A cradle of wildlife
Quick and easy access to the Ngorongoro Crater floor is guaranteed by the camp’s location on the east-side of the rim, a short distance from the access road. Thanks to the year-round water supply in the Ngorongoro Crater, the 100-square-mile crater floor teems with Black rhinos, wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo and elephants, as well as a significant population of predators, including lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and leopard.
The camp’s Maasai wardens take guests on tracks in the surrounding forest and into the hills, ensuring that safari-goers staying at Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp can fully experience the area.
