The multimillion-rand upgrade to Durban’s beachfront promenade is expected to be completed by the start of the holiday season.
The promenade extension, at a cost of R380 million (US$26m), forms a small portion of the R35 billion ($2.3bn) Point Waterfront Development, which aims to overhaul the entire area to attract more investment and tourists.
Running from uShaka Marine World along the area’s most popular beaches to Vetch’s Pier, the promenade will be 30 metres wide, and feature beach facilities and amenities that include change rooms, ablutions for bathers and staff facilities.
Public parking and dedicated parking for water-sport clubs will be provided beneath the promenade. There will also be an amphitheatre, pedestrian ramps and new lifeguard towers.
The Durban Point Development aims to completely transform Durban’s prime beachfront property into a massive mixed-use waterfront.
The final build will include hotels, residential apartments, office parks and retail developments – and will also see a new cruise ship terminal nearby.
Proposed developments include a number of resorts, hotels and lodges around KZN’s tourist hotspots.
The precinct is only expected to be completed after 2022.
