Australian and American travellers are among the world’s top sustainable travel intenders. Some 59% of Australians and 53% of Americans evaluate their destination decisions on how to reduce their environmental impact and to ensure sustainable tourism impacts.
This is according to a survey by Bookings.com.
The survey revealed that travellers’ attitudes are evolving to be more environmentally sustainable, with 52% of global travellers deciding [in 2015] to choose a destination based on its social and environmental impact. Only 10% of respondents took a traditional sustainable trip, or eco-tour, in 2014.
Travellers from other countries, such as Brazil with 74% of respondents, 39% of Dutch respondents and 36% of Danish respondents, said they would base their travel decisions on such concerns.
The majority of global travellers in 2015 will ensure their tourism has a positive impact on local communities, however the survey respondents showed that not all were prepared to relinquish luxury to reduce their carbon footprint.
The survey revealed that, of all aspiring sustainable travellers, 50% were more likely to book luxury accommodation in 2015 than in 2014, and three times more said they would book to stay in more eco-friendly accommodations in 2015 than in 2014.
"Sustainable travel is more than just 'going green' - it's also about helping to support and retain local cultures, economies and environments while travelling. Most people don't know how easy it is to weave sustainability into the types of trips they already want to take," says Todd Dunlap, Managing Director of the Americas at Bookings.com.
