Vodacom Mozambique will enhance its 3G services to Pomene in the south of the country, with a solution from integrated satellite network solutions provider, Intelsat SA.
The service provider is looking at meeting the growing demand for 3G services from the tourism sector, with a multi-year agreement that will see the upgrade of a network using the Intelsat EpicNG high-throughput satellite platform.
A media statement about the acquisition says: “Pomene has become an important tourist destination for the country and, as it attracts more visitors and cruise ships, the mobile network infrastructure needed to be rapidly and cost-effectively upgraded to meet increased demand.”
Jason Bates, Media Communications Manager of Intelsat, says: “The solution will serve all cruise ship passengers visiting Pomene as part of their cruise vacation. Cruise passengers expect the same WiFi connectivity and speeds during their trip that they receive at home. With these increased demands for faster connectivity everywhere, the ability to deliver a consistent, high-quality broadband experience is becoming increasingly important for the cruise sector.
“Today, the typical family walks on to a cruise ship with up to seven connected devices, which they use to surf the web, send and receive emails, and provide social media updates,” he says. This multi-connectivity is a great window of opportunity for a travel destination, because “as more passengers share pictures, and document their experience via social media, it drives additional interest in the cruise line and the destination”.
