Air Zimbabwe is set to resume direct flights from Harare to Dar es Salaam in mid-May, with plans to possibly resume flights to China.

“We are finalising the logistics of a direct flight to Dar es Salaam. The flight is set to commence on May 14 using the Airbus A320. The initial frequency will be two days a week – Tuesdays and Saturdays,” said Shingai Taruvinga, Air Zimbabwe’s Public Relations Officer, adding that the schedule would be revised depending on demand.

Taruvinga said the decision to reinstate flights followed requests from clients and that direct flights would also bolster tourism for the destination.

She said the airline was also working on several options to re-introduce other regional and international flights with the resumption of the China route being mulled by the principals.

“We are still exploring as to when we will resume flights to China but we have not yet come up with a final position,” she said.

Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Walter Mzembi, said Air Zimbabwe must consider resuming direct flights to China as the country was one of the fastest growing sources of new tourists.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority will be launching a VisitZim campaign in China as the authority intensifies efforts to grow the Chinese market.

The authority said the campaign would ride on the relaxed visa regime for Chinese organised group travel, adding that the preliminary work had been done.

“There is vast potential to grow the country’s tourism by tapping into the vast Chinese market where the number of outbound visitors has been exponentially growing over the past decade,” said ZTA.
