The International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT) World Symposium will be held at Emperors Palace, Ekurhuleni, adjacent to OR Tambo International Airport, from 16-19 February, 2015.
The symposium, ‘Cultivating Sustainable and Peaceful Communities and Nations through Tourism, Culture and Sport’, will honour the legacies of the world’s three champions of peace and non-violence: Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr, by building bridges of tourism, friendship and peace between Africa, Asia, North America and other regions of the world.
This will be the 17th international conference and seventh global Summit of IIPT since launching the Peace through Tourism movement at its first global conference in Vancouver in 1988.
The two basic aims of the symposium are to identify strategies and best practice in cultivating productive, sustainable, peaceful and welcoming communities through tourism, culture and sports; and to spot the potential roles of tourism, culture and sports in reconciliation and socio-economic redevelopment of countries that have experienced conflict, with a view towards building sustainable and peaceful nations.
Pre-symposium events will include full-day educator, student/youth and traditional leader forums as well as a community tourism workshop and media workshop.
