From February 1 to March 31, Constitution Hill will host “I Put My Hand On My Chest To Feel My Heartbeat” – an exhibition by the Of Soul and Joy (OSJ) programme. The exhibition will offer an intimate look at life in Thokoza through the work of past and present OSJ students using photography to tell the personal and collective stories of this community.
Curated by Lesole Tauatswala, Constitution Hill’s Creative Uprising Hub Co-ordinator, the exhibition will celebrate 30 years of South Africa’s democracy while highlighting the creativity and lived experiences of Thokoza’s youth. The works will reflect identity, heritage, love, spirituality and family – themes presenting a nuanced perspective of life in this historically significant township.
The displayed photographs, capturing everyday moments and deeper cultural narratives, will showcase the relationships between individuals, their environments and their communities. Many of the works examine personal connections, such as family dynamics and ancestral ties, while others explore broader social themes, including belonging and cultural symbolism.
Tauatswala says, importantly, the exhibition highlights the role of creative expression in fostering a sense of community pride and empowerment. Jabulani Dhlamini, OSJ Project Manager, says it encapsulates “the pulse of this vibrant community” with each image telling a unique story that contributes to the collective portrait of Thokoza.
The event will include walkabouts and panel discussions to provide visitors with insight into the creative process and the significance of the works:
