Leading tour operator Abercrombie & Kent (A&K) has called on registered architects to enter an international open design competition for a state-of-the-art conservation centre at the Maasai Mara National Reserve’s Oloololo Gate.
The competition has been initiated with the support of the Mara Triangle Conservancy, Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (A&KP) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBE).
The conservation centre is envisioned as an innovative and engaging facility that provides visitors with interactive and exciting experiences while promoting sustainable tourism practices.
The facility will include parking, essential amenities, an exhibition space, interactive learning zones, a gift shop, and environmentally conscious design features.
“A&K’s foundation is rooted in Kenya's heritage, with a passionate commitment to conservation and honouring the Maasai culture. The new centre is more than a building; it's a symbol of sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship, aiming to protect the Masai Mara's natural beauty and cultural legacy,” said A&K CEO Cristina Levis.
A&K was founded in the Maasai Mara by Geoffrey Kent in 1962.
The competition is open internationally to registered architects, with collaboration encouraged between individuals and organisations of different size, expertise and experience.
The deadline for Phase 1 design entries is June 18. Entrants must be officially registered through RIBA Competitions and have a Unique Registration Number (URN), while entries are subject to a registration fee of £50 (€58.7).
